钢琴师朱莉叶特和丈夫皮埃尔分手后，带着女儿朱丽住在小镇上，靠给别人的孩子上钢琴课和为乐队演奏手翻乐谱维持生活。朱丽从小在妈妈的影响下练习弹琴，12岁时就已经显示出很高的演奏天赋。皮埃尔在镇上开了一家小酒店，每星期和女儿见一次面。朱丽每天勤奋练琴，演奏水平提高很快。当朱莉叶特发现女儿的演奏技艺超过了自己时，心灵陷入了极度痛苦的矛盾之中，她忧郁得难以自拔。朱丽很理解母亲的心情，把自己弹奏的乐曲录音放给病塌上的母亲听，唤醒母亲对她的爱以及对生活的希望。在父亲的鼓励下，朱丽参加了音乐学院的入学考试，实现了她向往已久的艺术之梦。
