I 1996 fik Rolling Stone journalisten David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) lov til at følge forfatteren David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel), der netop havde udgivet sin banebrydende, episke roman Infinite Jest. Wallace endte med at begå selvmord i 2008 i en alder af 46 år. De interviews, Lipsky optog med ham i løbet af de 5 dage, de var sammen, er dog en guldgrube til at forstå manden, og det er dét, denne film forsøger at gøre.
